/sup 180/Ta/sup g/,m production cross sections from the /sup 180/Hf(p,n) reaction

Cross sections have been determined for the production of the J/sup ..pi../ = 1/sup +/ /sup 180/Ta/sup g/ from the /sup 180/Hf(p,n) reaction from measurements of ..gamma.. rays emitted following the electron capture and ..beta.. decay of this 8.1-h state. Total /sup 180/Ta production cross sections were determined from measurements of the thick-target (p,n) yield. Upper limits on the cross sections for the production of the long-lived J/sup ..pi../ = 9/sup -/ /sup 180/Ta/sup m/ were obtained by subtracting the /sup 180/Ta/sup g/ cross sections from the total (p,n) cross sections. These measurements are compared with the results of a statistical-model evaporation calculation.
