beta. -decays of /sup 180/Hf/sup m/ and /sup 180/Lu and the origin of /sup 180/Ta

We are interested in determining the nucleosynthetic mechanism responsible for the production of the naturally occurring isomer, /sup 180/Ta. An attractive idea is the suggestion by Beer and Ward that /sup 180/Ta may be produced in the standard s- and r-processes through previously undetected ..beta..-decay branches of /sup 180/Hf/sup m/ and /sup 180/Lu. The 5.5 hour, J/sup ..pi../=8/sup -/ /sup 180/Hf isomer lies 204 keV above the long-lived J/sup ..pi../=9/sup -/ isomer in /sup 180/Ta; therefore an allowed Gammow-Teller ..beta..-transition should compete with the K-inhibited electromagnetic decays to the ground state rotational band of /sup 180/Hf. The /sup 180/Hf/sup m/ branching ratio to /sup 180/Ta, f/sub ..beta../, need only be 3.1% to account for the /sup 180/Ta abundance by the s-process alone, while log-ft considerations predict a range of from 0.14% to 22%.
