Journal Article · · Electr. Light Power (Boston); (United States)

1977 figures for the top-50 locally owned and operated electric utilities show an overall kilowatt hour (kWh) sales gain of 3.1 percent, revenue gain of 21.7 percent, and a net margins gain of 9.8 percent. In spite of these favorable figures, five utilities in the drought-stricken Pacific Northwest show losses for the year and a total of 22 show declines in net income. Performance data for each of the 50 utilities includes the total and percentage gain of kWh sales, customers, net utility plant, revenues, and net income or margin. Substantial gains were experienced by Sunbelt utilities and the overall percentage increase of customers served jumped 6.5 percent, compared to a 2.8 percent gain the previous year. A steady growth trend is shown for locally owned utilities.
