Photon and neutral pion production in the upsilon region

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6688787
Various properties of photon and neutral pion production from the Upsilon resonances and the nearby continuum i e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations are discussed. These measurements were made using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A measurement of the photon multiplicity and photon energy fraction of the continuum and the Upsilon(4S) is presented. Comparison with charged multiplicity measurements is made. Using the photon energy fraction measurement and previous measurements of the charged energy fraction, the amount of undetected energy is calculated and compared with expectations from conventional sources. A measurement of the neutral pion momentum spectrum of the continuum and Upsilon(1S) is presented. Comparison is made with the momentum spectrum of charged pions. Also, comparison of the single photon spectrum from neutral pion decay and the observed single photon spectrum is made. A measurement of the direct photon spectrum from Upsilon(1S) decay is also presented. These photons are interpreted as coming from the decay Upsilon(1S) ..-->.. photon + gluon + gluon. The shape of the observed photon energy spectrum is compared with several theoretical predictions. The value of the strong coupling constant, ..cap alpha../sub s/, and the energy scale parameter of quantum chromodynamics, ..lambda../sub MS/, associated with each prediction, is deduced.
