Bose-Einstein correlations in electron-positron annihilations in the upsilon region

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5491262
The author has used the CLEO detector to study Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations among charged pions produced in the hadronic decays of the upsilon(1S) and in continuum e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations around ..sqrt..s = 10.5 GeV. The author discusses different parametrizations of the effect, and finds indications that the production of long-lived particles in these events can account for the observed reduction of the strength of the effect. Source dimensions of quark and gluon jets were determined. From the standpoint of BE correlations, no difference between the hadronization of quarks and gluons was seen. In a separate study, the author measured the total inclusive cross sections for pion, kaon and proton production at low momenta in the hadronic decays of the upsilon(1S) and in continuum e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations around ..sqrt..s = 10.5 GeV.
