This volume contains the papers and discussions of the second international conference on Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). The conference was organized by the Transmission Substations and Power Systems Planning and Operations Programs of EPRI's Electrical Systems Division. It was held at the Park Plaza Hotel at Boston, Massachusetts May 18--20,1992. The objective of the conference was to bring together an international team of experts in the application of power electronics to the power system including engineers and executives from EPRI members, university researchers, consultants and equipment manufacturers. The topics of the conference centered on EPRI's FACTS initiative to achieve the maximum possible loading, control, flexibility and thereby utilization of the ac power grid using power semiconductors and advanced control concepts. The conference started with a keynote presentation by Dr. Narain Hingorani, Vice President of EPRI's Electrical Systems Division. This was followed by five sessions which occupied two and one hall days. The topics for the sessions were: I. System Planning Aspects; II. Implementation Studies; III and IV. Demonstration Projects; V. Research Directions.
