Journal Article · · J. Food Prot.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6686691
Microwave radiation is becoming more prevalent in the environment as a result of the increased use of radar units, guidance systems, power transmission lines, and microwave-operated ovens and appliances. Thermal effects of microwave radiation on a biological system were examined. Adverse effects on eyes, the nervous system, various blood cells, macromolecules, organs and organ systems, bone marrow, and cell membranes were identified. Genetic effects, particularly chromosomal aberrations and mitotic abnormalities, on plant and animal cells were observed. A Threshold Limit Value of exposure has been established. Precautions that must be taken when using a microwave oven or appliance are discussed. (2 diagrams, 41 references, 1 table)
