Instability of the current in Cd/sub x/Hg/sub 1-x/Te subjected to a magnetic field

An investigation was made of current-voltage characteristics of n-type Cd/sub x/Hg/sub 1-x/Te solid solutions of compositions 0.2../sub 4.2/ approx. =10/sup 4/--10/sup 5/ cm/sup 2/xV/sup -1/xsec/sup -1/) and of their photoresponse to the 29.97 ..mu.. wavelength of an H/sub 2/O vapor laser. The measurements were carried out in magnetic fields upt to 55 kOe at temperatures of T=4.2 and 1.6/sup 0/K. It was found that the current-voltage characteristics were S-shaped and that noise oscillations of approx.10--1000 Hz frequency were generated. The results were attributed to an overheating instability under the phonon bottleneck conditions.
