Fracture: Amoco makes industry history at east Texas gas well

Fracturing is a method aimed at improving recovery of oil or gas from a reservoir which has already been penetrated and waiting to be produced. The method is employed when the producing formation is so tight (low permeability) that the oil or gas is restricted from moving freely toward the well. A frac job consists of forcing sand and fluids into the formation, literally fracturing or cracking it open. Once the formation is opened the sand remains, propping open the cracks. These tiny crevices or fissures permit oil or gas to move more easily into the well. The result: increased production. In the Woodlawn field of E. Texas, this man-made force was to be applied to the Amoco-Jones Gas Unit No. 3--a well that had been completed for several months, but never had attained production of more than 210 Mcfd. A half-million gallons of fluid--primarily water and condensate carrying 860,000 lb of sand and tiny glass beads--was forced into the well. Several weeks following completion of the job, the well was producing more than 2 MMcfd--a 10-fold increase.
