The fractionation factor for the chloride ion (phi/sub Cl/sup -//) was determined by studying the dependence of the chemical shifts of the water protons on the concentration of the solubilized chlorides (KCl, NaCl) and the deuterium content of the solvent. The results indicated that phi/sub Cl/sup -// = 0.95 +/- 0.07, in agreement with other spectroscopic studies which demonstrated that the bonding in the solvation shell of the Cl/sup -/ ion is only slightly weaker than that in bulk water.
