Boiloff gas from LNG cargo tanks can be used more economically and efficiently for tanker propulsion by dividing the total boiloff into 2 portions, recompressing and liquefying one, and using the energy generated in the 1st-part operation to heat the 2nd portion. This arrangement allows better utilization of energy and use of smaller heat exchangers and simpler, less expensive compressors for the part of flow to be returned to storage. The 2-part flow ratio is controlled by a 3-way valve according to the condensation pressure.
