Reliquefaction of boil off gas

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5916069
In an alternative to using LNG boiloff as boiler fuel in LNG tankers, a new approach liquefies part (about 30%) of the boiloff gas by injecting LNG from the cargo into the boiloff before condensing the latter and/or expanding a portion of the condensed material and recycling it. The method consists of separating off a portion of the boiloff stream that has been compressed for use as fuel in the ship's boilers, compressing and condensing it, and recovering the liquid fraction from the condensate. The condensation process thus consists in part in using at least part of the sensible cold in the boiloff prior to compression and in part by cold obtained by expanding the condensate.
