Reliquefaction of boil off gas
Patent

Boiloff gas may be reliquefied by Petrocarbon Developments Ltd's new method, which requires neither space for equipment in the machinery area of the ship nor the utilization of steam from the ship's boilers, and has a greatly reduced cooling-water consumption. All of the boiloff gas may be reliquefied or some 20% can be diverted for use in the prime mover for the reliquefaction process, allowing the equipment to be substantially self-contained. The method utilizes a compression refrigerator having two refrigerant loops: In one, the compressed refrigerant is expanded in a turbine; in the other, it is expanded without the performance of external work. The expansion turbine and a gas turbine (which can be fueled by the gas) provide the power for compressing the refrigerant. The gas is reliquefied by heat exchange with cold, expanded refrigerant in the second loop. One embodiment uses open loops, with the gas providing the refrigerant.
