Liquefied gas tanker construction using stiffener members

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5721226
Conch International Methane Ltd's new LNG-cargo-tank design increases safety and reduces cost by permitting any water that may leak into the insulation area to drain out through a simpler, less expensive method than the securing strips of previous approaches. Plate stiffeners are installed on the inward faces of the vertical walls of the cargo holds in a double-hull liquefied gas tanker to support a lining of thermal insulation so as to be spaced from and generally parallel to the inward faces. The stiffeners have apertures through which, during tanker operation, any water leaking into the space between the walls and the insulation will drain to the bottom of each cargo hold for removal. This construction utilizes the wall stiffeners also as supports for the insulation lining, which preferably consists of plywood panels connected together side-by-side on the stiffeners via securing strips and adhesive.
