A lighting expert describes industrial lighting systems and suggests ways to meet cost criteria while also satisfying lighting requirements. When choosing between incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity discharge (HID) systems, it is important to consider the lamp's life, color rendition, and ballast requirements as well as its energy efficiency so that the selection is appropriate for its application. Other considerations are maintenance, operating, and relamping costs. 2 figures. (DCK)
