How to install energy-saving fluorescents

Experts suggest four areas of consideration for users planning to retrofit fluorescent lamps in an existing lighting system: (1) compatibility between lamps and ballasts will prolong service life; (2) color rendition in energy-efficient fluorescents is less attractive; (3) group relamping is more cost-effective than spot changes; and (4) proper lamp maintenance can improve lighting levels as much as 30% and lengthen service life. The author offers specific suggestions to help users apply these four principles and to optimize their lighting systems. (DCK)
