The petroleum situation in Brazil has become much more favorable than in the past politically, economically and geologically. The monetary exchange rate is low, but has been stable for many months and inflation has been halted. Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras), the government oil monopoly, is now operating more efficiently and successfully. It has been active in exploration, and lately has made a number of significant discoveries of new oil fields. Especially important is the new Carmopolis Field, located in the Sergipe basin, about 12 miles from the Atlantic coast. Another significant oil discovery has been made in the Barreirinhas basin, in a deep Cretaceous graben on the coast of Maranhao, northern Brazil. Development drilling continues in the established fields of the Reconcavo basin. Production of 92,619 bbl per day in the first half of 1965 was somewhat larger than in the like period of 1964. A further increase is anticipated, as secondary recovery by seawater injection on a large scale is planned.
