Newest Petrobras discovery will compensate for depletion of Brazil's Bahia Fields

A production potential of 16,000 bbl of oil per day is what Petrobras engineers expect to develop this year in Brazil's newest field, Camopolis, in the State of Sergipe. Calculated on the basis of 30 producing wells, the field's crude reserves amounted to 2 billion bbl as of April 1965. This year's drilling program for Carmopolis calls for 80 wells, and a total of 300 with 1200-ft spacing have been staked. Petrolbras hopes to develop Carmopolis producible reserves to equal the country's present figure of 800,000,000 bbl. While this will not make Brazil self-sufficient in oil, it will enable it to increase by a substantial volume its present production of 91,000 bbl/d, thus compensating for the gradual depletion of the Bahia fields. Carmopolis' oil comes from the lower Cretaceous Muribeca formation, tapped by well Cp-1 at a depth of 2408 ft. Discovery was by a combination of surface geology and seismic prospecting. The discovery well test 90 bbl of oil per day flowing production. Petrobras engineers intend to put all the field's wells on artificial lift from the time they are completed. Their expectation of 16,000 bbl/d from the field's first 80 well is based on a pumping average of 200 bbl/d per well.
