Small-business owners report the low-cost control devices for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and lights are paying for themselves in under a year. The load control devices save money by reducing electricity consumption, but utilities recommend checking billing procedures before making demand control purchases. The devices available perform automatic thermostat setback and duty cycling. Utilities offer walk-through energy audits to help businesses decide whether to invest in large energy management systems or the low-cost alternatives. Several businesses report their experiences with various devices. (DCK)
