Ishikawajima-Harima Jukogyo KK's new thermal insulation for membrane-type cargo tanks used in LNG tankers offers a stronger structure, improved ability to insulate against heat, and lower construction costs. The insulation consists of many heat-insulation sandwich-type structure units attached to the outer tank shell. Each unit consists of many ribs or joists sandwiched by top and bottom plates. Insulating material fills the spaces between the ribs, which are constructed of a pair of spaced plywood sheets.
