Insulated storage tank for liquid or liquefied products

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7045842
Gaz Transport's new leakproof and isothermal cargo tank, designed especially for LNG transport in integrated-type tankers, consists of successive assemblies of watertight and thermal-insulation barriers. The primary assembly (in contact with the cargo) consists of a layer of insulating plastic foam whose surface provides the primary watertight barrier. The secondary assembly, located between the primary and tank structure (double hull or double wall of a ship), is an insulating barrier consisting of boxes with plastic foam and directly affixed to the tank by threaded pins attached to the tank structure. The secondary watertight barrier consists of metallic sheets with edges projecting toward the inside of the tank. These sheets are welded edge to edge by their projected edges over the 2 faces of a metallic flange or wing. The flanges or wings are inserted in the planes of the horizontal joints of the boxes in the secondary insulating barrier. Metallic screens or grids (5 to 20 meshes per meter) contained within the primary layer of plastic foam can be hooked to the flanges or wings.
