Gomez: brightest spot in the Delaware Basin. [Texas]

Pecos County, in the heart of the Delaware Basin, is one of the richest natural gas producing areas in the country. Of the 8 or 9 deep gas fields in the county, the Gomez field, north and west of the old frontier town of Fort Stockton, is the richest. It also has the world's deepest producing wells, and, according to figures published in the Oil Gas J., has reserves of close to 10 trillion cu ft of natural gas. In this prolific field, whose boundaries are still to be fully defined, Gulf Oil Corp. is the largest leaseholder and by far the biggest producer. For the past 2 yr, a good portion of all the ultra-deep drilling equipment in the country has been concentrated in Pecos County and much of that in the Gomez field where it is being used on Gulf wells. At this writing, Gulf has 15 completed wells with 3 drilling, or being completed, all on 640 acres spacing--one well to a square mile. The calculated absolute open-flow potential of these wells varies, but it is large by any yardstick--from 15 to 790 MMcfd. The wells are not produced at this rate, but some fraction of it in line with good production practice and in compliance with proration regulations and availability of pipeline facilities. The early history of the Gomez field is described together with the drilling problems encountered in reaching the deep pay.
