Humble Oil and Refining Co.'s No. 11 Willbanks well in Gomez Field of Pecos County, West Texas, recently took over the title of world's deepest producer. Drilled with Humble Rig 32 to a total depth of 23,564 ft in 300 days, the Willbanks tested 9.3 MMcfd from perforations in the Ellenburger between 21,883 and 22,610 ft. Humble calculated the open-flow potential at 14 MMcfd. Humble's casing and mud programs for the Willbanks well were based on experience gained from drilling 6 previous Ellenburger producers in the Gomez Field. Because of the depth and pressures, a considerable amount of high-strength casing was used in the well. To simplify design of the tubing string, to improve well deliverability, and to simplify treating the well, Humble designed the completion so that the well would produce through the 5-in. liner and then through 4-1/2-in. tubing.
