World's deepest producer: drilling/completion landmark

Journal Article · · Pet. Eng.; (United States)

Jake L. Hamon, independent producer, established a world's record depth commercial production mark earlier this summer with completion of No. 1 Waples-Platter, West Texas wildcat completed for absolute open-flow potential of 50,000 cfd from 20,470-21,070 ft. This well may be a landmark effort in independent producer annals. Every type of conceivable drilling problem was encountered. This well which was drilled from grass roots to total depth on day-work basis, should prove that ultra-deep drilling is not a field limited exclusively to the major company. This record showed that with sufficient notification and access to available information, the service companies through their research departments, will provide well-engineered products to do the job, even though it may require the use of newly-developed, unproven products at times. The casing program and drilling curve on the well are shown together with pertinent data.
