Transversely excited Sr/sup +/ recombination laser

Operation of a strontium-ion recombination laser in a transverse-discharge configuration is reported. Laser oscillation occurred on the 431-nm transition of Sr/sup +/ over a range of discharge parameters, including He gas pressure up to 200 kPa (1500 Torr). Output energy densities of 25 ..mu..J/cm/sup 3/ have obtained from an active volume of approximately 40 cm/sup 3/.
