High-pressure high-current transversely excited Sr/sup +/ recombination laser

Operation of a transversely excited Sr/sup +/ recombination laser at buffer gas (He) pressures up to 1300 Torr and discharge current densities up to 10/sup 3/ A/cm/sup 2/ is reported. Specific energy densities on the lambda430.5-nm Sr/sup +/ line exceed 50 ..mu..J/cm/sup 3/ for the 30-cm/sup 3/ active volume device with no fundamental limitations observed. Double-pulse experiments indicate pulse repetition frequencies near 1 MHz may be possible.
