High-power transverse-discharge Ca/sup +/ recombination laser

Operation of a transverse-discharge-excited Ca/sup +/ recombination laser at high He buffer gas pressures (1200 Torr) and high discharge current densities (10/sup 3/ A/cm/sup 2/) is reported. Single laser pulse energies at lambda373.7 nm exceeding 0.7 mJ have been obtained corresponding to specific energy densities over 35 ..mu..J/cm/sup 3/. There appear to be no fundamental limitations to attainment of pulse repetition rates in the megahertz range.
