This paper reports on the fabrication of a 980 nm ridge waveguide pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well laser that satisfies the requirements on compact and efficient pump sources for erbium-doped optical fiber amplifiers. The laser oscillates in the fundamental spatial mode and emits a maximum single-ended output power of 240 mW.
