Title: Supported polyolefin catalyst components and methods of making and using the same

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6626043

This patent describes a method of producing polyolefins by the polymerization of alpha-olefins of a mixture of alpha-olefins suitable for polymerization, which comprises contacting under polymerization conditions such alpha-olefins or mixture of alpha-olefins with: (i) a polymerization catalyst and (ii) a suitable cocatalyst; wherein the catalyst comprises either (i) a solid which contains hydrocarbon-soluble titanium, or (ii) a slurry containing both titanium-containing solid and hydrocarbon-soluble titanium, the catalyst being prepated by combing (1) an aluminum trihaliude, (2) a first organic electron donor, (3) a support base selected from the group consisting of Group IIA or IIIA salts or salts of multivalent metals for the first transition series with the exception of copper, and (4) a polymerization-active titanium compound in any order, while grinding and then heating the resulting solid in an inert hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature in the range of about 40/sup 0/C to 150/sup 0/C for a period of between about 1 - 24 hours; wherein the titanium content of the catalyst is in the range of about 2 to about 10 weight percent by weight of titanium as metal based on the weight of the solid portion of the catalyst; and wherein the hydrocarbon-soluble titanium comprises 25 to 60 weight percent of the total titanium content.
