Supported polyolefin catalyst components and methods of making and using same
This patent describes a process for polymerizing at least one olefin having from 2 to 18 carbon atoms which comprises contacting the olefin under polymerization conditions with a catalyst system which comprises: (a) a catalyst prepared by the process comprising (1) co-comminuting an aluminum halide; at least one electron donor; a Group IVB-VIB transition metal compound; and a support base selected from the group consisting of the Group IIA and IIIA salts and the salts of the multivalent metals of the first transition series with the exception of copper to produce a coground solid; (2) extracting the coground solid with an organic liquid; and (3) separating the solid from the liquid under such conditions that at least 5 weight percent of the aluminum in the coground solid is removed characterized in that the extraction and the separation are conducted at a temperature below the boiling point of the lowest boiling portion of the organic liquid used in the extraction but in the range of about 70/sup 0/C to about 100/sup 0/C; and (b) an organometallic cocatalyst.
