Process and catalyst for olefin polymerization

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5079572
A process is described for the polymerization of alpha-olefins monomers comprising contacting the monomers under polymerization conditions with a catalyst system which consists of a catalyst prepared by (1) reacting at least one metal halide selected from the halides of scandium, yttrium, and rare earth metals having atomic numbers in the range of 57 to 71 with at least one transition metal compound in which the transition metal is titanium and in which the transition metal is bonded to at least one atom. The atom is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, and the oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms are in turn bonded to a carbon-containing radical, then (2) reacting the product of (1) with an organometallic compound comprising an organoaluminium compound, and then (3) treating the resulting solid with a halide ion exchanging source comprising at least one of the group consisting of halides of titanium, and a cocatalyst comprising organometallic compounds of metals of Groups IA, IIA, IIB, and IIIA.
