A process of producing and compressing for injection the exhaust gas from a spark-ignited natural gas engine is presented. This process takes the exhaust gases from a supercharged spark-ignited natural gas engine that has been modified to reduce the O/sub 2/ level in the exhaust to very low levels. The exhaust gases are treated by passing through catalytic converters that reduce O/sub 2/ and total nitrogen oxides to essentially zero. This process, together with subsequent dehydration of the gas, renders it noncorrosive during compression to high pressure in compressors that are driven by the engine producing the exhaust gas for the process. This inert gas is injected into the oil field to increase the production of a declining field. The modifications to a standard turbocharged 4-cycle natural gas engine to reduce the exhaust O/sub 2/ from approx. 10% to > .5% are described. Catalytic process and reactions that make such engine modifications necessary also are covered. Performance data of the operation of this engine are given to illustrate the change in characteristics of the engine from normal operations to its inert gas generating operation.
