Synfuels subsidies: reports of their death were greatly exaggerated

New signals indicate that the Reagan Administration is relaxing its effort to eliminate government subsidies for a synfuels program. Cuts will probably be approved for some high-cost demonstration projects and some feasibility studies, but the Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SFC) and subsidies for commercial plants may survive the budget cuts against the recommendation of Budget Director Stockman. The new position has evolved over several weeks in response to Congressional pressure, the long time scale for synfuel subsidies, and the independent nature of the SFC. (DCK)
