Synfuels and solar subsidies

The Energy Security Act of 1980, touted by many as the answer to the nation's energy and economic troubles, is seen by others as a mixed bag of subsidies with little benefit to consumers and taxpayers. Skeptics see the $88 billion Act as a way to subsidize utilities and keep oil companies in control of the coal industry in order to reindustrialize America. The Act sets the legal stages for the US Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SFC) to take a number of directions and have a variety of effects, although there is still time for citizen activists to challenge its weak points.
