Death of synfuels

The Energy Security Act has not succeeded in developing synthetic fuels for several reasons: (1) The Act established an unrealistic quota and data for production instead of a program for research and development, (2) the $88 billion budget could not be maintained as the overall budget deficit climbed, and (3) the Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SFC) managers took the approach of investment bankers instead of judging applicants on the merits of their technology. As oil prices have fallen to the point where synthetic fuels could not compete, the SFC projects have run into financial problems. Despite the SFC's shortcomings, future energy security will be best served by not dissolving the SFC.
