Lubricant factors in rolling contact fatigue

Conference · · Natl. Bur. Stand. (U.S.), Spec. Publ.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6607199
Mobil has been using four bench fatigue testers to investigate the influence of lubricant chemistry factors on fatigue life. These are: rotating-beam fatigue tester, rolling 4-ball fatigue tester, unisteel bearing fatigue machine, and GE rolling contact fatigue rig. However, there is much to be learned on the role of lubricant and additive chemistry on the fatigue life of bearings. Much more work is needed to establish guidelines as to what type additives are detrimental and what type additives are beneficial. On the latter, work is needed to define the size of the increases to be expected. In all probability, gains in fatigue life will be seized upon by designers to operate bearings under more severe conditions.
