Partial averaged cross sections have been measured for (n,..cap alpha..) reactions in /sup 143/Nd, /sup 147/Sm, and /sup 149/Sm in the neutron-energy regions 2, 24.5, and 144 keV using interference filters in the VVR-M reactor at the Nuclear Research Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. The ..cap alpha..-particle strength function for these nuclei has been studied as a function of neutron energy, ..cap alpha..-particle energy, and the mass number. The results agree with the predictions of the statistical theory. No dependence of the ..cap alpha..-particle strength function on excitation energy has been observed. In the case of the target nucleus /sup 147/Sm a weak enhancement of the ..cap alpha.. transition to the 2/sup +/ state in comparison with the transition to the 0/sup +/ state is possible.
