Firewood use on National Forests in the western United States

Responses to a mail survey by USDA Forest Service personnel in 81 of the 87 National Forests in 11 western states indicated that firewood use increased from 1970 to 1982. An apparent decrease in firewood use in 1983 may reflect more accurate records following the introduction of permit fees. Until reliable, accurate data is available, use of this forest resource cannot be fully understood and the ability to predict future trends is limited. However, 93% of forest managers predict that demand for firewood will increase during 1985-1990. 9 references.
