Demand for firewood in North-central New Mexico has increased while supplies have decreased. A successful trial was held in 1982 in Carson National Forest, in which the public was allowed to fell marked trees in dense ponderosa pine stands that required thinning. Silvicultural objectives were met on 490 acres. The demand for firewood was greater than predicted. In 1984, the costs of thinning by public were $18/acre, compared with $54/acre for employing a thinning crew.
