Title: Firewood use in Idaho: implications for forest management

Journal Article · · J. For.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5099540

In April 1981, a questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 1096 people holding permits to collect firewood for domestic use in 10 national forests. The most important reason given for collecting firewood was to save money, although the average distance travelled was 50.5 miles (each way), to obtain an average of 5.9 cords. Recreation was not reported to be an important reason, contrary to the beliefs of many forest managers. Willingness to pay fees for permits, road maintenance and yarding wood to the roadside was 46-60, 18-34 and 28-42% respectively.
