Plugging materials for vertical fractures

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6583193
This is a method for the vertical fracturing of oil and gas wells, without increasing the water production. Crushable or deformable solid particles which have a minimum dimension of at least 0.03 in. and a maximum strength of 10 lb per particle, are used to shut off a lower portion of the vertical fracture. The particles may consist of coal, coke, brittle plastics, brittle glass, rubber, pliable plastics, tar, or hydrogenated vegetable oils. The particles are mixed with a carrier fluid in which the particles settle at a rate in excess of 0.1 ft per minute. The mixture is pumped into the vertical fracture where the particles settle from the carrier fluid to yield a relatively impermeable mass. (6 claims)
