A fracturing fluid which is used to control vertical fractures includes a material responsive within the formation to form a precipitate of a greater density than the fracturing fluid so that the precipitate tends to settle to the lower part of the fracture. A fracturing fluid containing sulfuric acid is injected into a calcareous formation wherein a precipitate of calcium sulfate is formed which in turn settles to the lower part of the fracture.
