A process is described for horizontally fracturing an earth formation that tends to fracture vertically. Hot fluid is injected at high pressure until vertical fractures form and have been closed due to thermal expansion of the formation. Fluid is then injected at a pressure sufficient to form horizontal fractures. (7 claims)
