Some manufacturers are voiding warranties because of damage to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) motors and compressors when users try to conserve energy with excessive duty cycling. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) will release guidelines for duty cycling next spring to help users plan cycling by motor size and load variation. Motors that fail because of excessive cycling often reveal burned-out relays, but compressors can be more difficult to diagnose. Other problems include burned-out air-handling motors and compressors, broken belts, starting failures, and slugging of thhe refrigerant. Manufacturers continue their liability for users who follow their instructions. (DCK)
