Duty-cycling limits set by Trane Div. and Lennox

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)

Two major heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) manufacturers, Trane CAC Inc. of Tyler, TX, and Lennox Industries Inc. of Dallas, have set guidelines for duty cycling (periodic starting and stopping equipment through load control devices) their equipment, threatening to void warranties if their guidelines are not followed. The main issue is the off time specified for equipment. Controversy for several years has concerned possible early breakdown of HVAC compressors and motors when combined with load control systems. The Trane and Lennox guidelines are apparently the first organized attempt on the part of HVAC manufacturers to deal with these questions. National Electrical Manufacturers Association guidelines are expected later this summer for cycling levels for different motor sizes under varying loads.
