A phase-shift analysis of pp elastic scattering at 1 GeV is carried through and the question of its ambiguity is investigated systematically for the first time. All the available experimental data at energies near 1 GeV were used, including the results of recent measurements of the total-cross-section differences Ds/sub L/ and Ds/sub T/ for pure spin states, the parameters C/sub L/L and A, and the differential cross section in the Coulomb-interference region. The random-search method was used to find solutions, a total of 533 trials being made. As a result of the work, 11 significantly different solutions were found. Introducing the dispersion-relation predictions for the two spin-dependent amplitudes at q = 0 into the analysis made it possible to reduce the number of solutions to five, of which only two have a negative /sup 1/S/sub 0/ phase shift.
