Ambiguities in the phase-shift analysis of the proton--proton scattering amplitude

It is shown that a phase-shift analysis of pp scattering when the five observables sigma, P, C/sub n/n, D/sub n/n, and K/sub n/n have been measured involves ambiguities analogous to the Gersten ambiguities in the phase-shift analysis of ..pi..N scattering. A study is made of the additional experiments required to eliminate these ambiguities. It is shown that it is sufficient for this purpose to measure three total cross sections (with unpolarized and polarized protons); this gives the imaginary parts of the amplitudes at theta = 0 and the polarization parameters C/sub l/l, C/sub m/m, C/sub l/m or D/sub l/l, D/sub m/m, D/sub l/m.
