An analysis is made of the elastic and inelastic scattering of protons by the /sup 56/Fe nucleus for two energy values E/sub p/ = 5.99 and 6.07 MeV. The analysis is based on the Hauser-Feshbach statistical theory, the optical model, the distorted-wave method, and the coupled-channel method in terms of the vibrational model and the Davydov-Chaban model. Optimal values are obtained for the parameters of the optical potential and the quadrupole deformation of the /sup 56/Fe nucleus which permit us to judge the degree to which the results of the analysis of proton scattering are influenced by the excitation of isobaric analog resonances, the coupling of the elastic and inelastic scattering channels, and the model representations regarding the nature of the low-lying excited states of the /sup 56/Fe nucleus.
