Resonances in inelastic scattering of protons by /sup 54/Fe and /sup 56/Fe in the 6-MeV region
Experimental data are reported on the energy and angular dependence of the spin-flip probability and the differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic (2/sup +//sub 1/) scattering of protons with energy in the vicinity of 6 MeV by /sup 54/Fe and /sup 56/Fe. The energy and angular dependences of the statistical components S/sub s/ and s/sub s/ have been calculated in terms of Hauser-Feshbach theory with inclusion of the coupling of doorway states with states of the statistical ensemble of the compound nucleus. Analysis of the coherent components is carried out with the programs ''optical model+resonance'' (elastic scattering) and ''DWBA+resonance'' (inelastic scattering). For /sup 54/Fe a satisfactory description is obtained of the coherent components S/sub c/, s/sub c/(p,p/sub 0/), and s/sub c/(p,p') in the vicinity of the resonances at E/sub p/ = 5.91 and 6.05 MeV for definite values of G/sub p/0, G/sub l/'j', G/sup arrow-down/, v/sub l/'j', and v/sub 0/. For the two nuclei we have evaluated the probabilities of population of the substates with M = +- 1 of the 2/sup +//sub 1/ level, the absolute and relative contributions of the statistical mechanism to the integrated cross sections for elastic scattering, and a lower limit of the ratio G/sub 0//D/sub 0/.
