Operators in the Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, are turning to prepackaged waterflood and gas-compression plants because of low first cost, ease of installation, and maintenance efficiency. Cia.Shell de Venezuela, one of several operators taking advantage of the new approach, claims the miniplants are as efficient, or more so, than conventional, bulkier facilities built on location. At present Cia.Shell is operating 2 packaged compressor plants and 18 waterflooding units. Features common to both types of installations are (1) the plants are prefabricated at mechanical shops located on the W. shore of Lake Maracaibo; (2) once ready, the complete plants are transferred to a giant floating crane and moved to the work site in a singe trip; and (3) a previously built, small, concrete-pile platform supports the structure. Since very little work is conducted offshore, labor and transportation savings are substantial.
